How to test your Jag's Brake booster

Here is the procedure of how to test the brake booster on your Jag.
  1. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal until is very hard and high.
  2. Press on the pedal (it should be hard) and while pressing start the engine.
Test conclusions:
  • If the pedal went down, this indicates that the booster and the vacuum going to the booster are doing what they are supposed to do.
  • If after pumping the brake pedal over about fifty times it doesn't get hard, then there is a leak on your brake booster system or a bad check valve.
  • If the pedal straight very hard and didn't go down, then the booster is not getting vacuum from the engine and you should look for a kinked hose or a stuck closed check valve.
To check the check valve you should run the engine for a couple of minutes, shut the engine off, then disconnect the vacuum hose at the engine side, and make sure no air flows through through the hose connecting to the booster. If air flows, the valve is stuck open.
