Here is the how to for replacing the headlamps on your Jaguar XJS.
- First you have to remove the three Phillip screws that hold that silver frame in place. There is one at the top, one at the bottom and one at the side as you can see in the next three photos.
- Then you pull the frame out.
- Now there is five T30 torx screws that hold the headlamp in place. Also there are two adjusters that are attached by a yellow clip to the car. So with a magnet, a 1/4 inch extension and a T30 socket remove the five screws.
- Remove the back cover and unplug the light and the parking light.
- Detach the yellow clip for the adjusters, is somewhere behind the headlamps in the engine compartment, so they can be fed through the hole.
- Now you can pull the headlight through. Just remove the clips to detach the head lamp from the black frame.
- Here is a pic of the new and old headlamp. No brainer why I'm replacing this one huh?
- Place the new bulbs on the new headlamp.
- Now clip back the black frame, and catch the new clips that were hopefully provided with you with the new headlamp.
- Now catch the Torx screws by hand first then tighten. Make sure the adjusters don't get caught anywhere.
- Catch and screw in the silver frame.
- Feed the adjuster cables through the proper hole.
- Catch them in the clip and clip it in place.
- Admire your awesome light.
- Park the car against a wall to make sure the lights align to the desired height. I had to screw the adjuster to move the installed lamp up a little bit.
- Make this picture of three XJS cars your new desktop background :D

Customer brought it in :/ I called him and he said he brought it from London because he was there... sorry i tried... best of luck, if I hear something I'll let you know!
DeleteThank you so much! Saved me quite some time and headache. What I do think you should do is (at least for the facelift) is WARN PEOPLE OF THE VERY VERY VERY ANNOYING TORX SCREW NEAREST THE RADIATOR because it is a TOTAL pig to get out. Viewers - you have been warned!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah I just did that, it was a bit of a fiddly one :D
DeleteBe advised, that the phillips screws that hold the silver rim around the headlight assembly are stainless steel. They are not ferrous, so a magnetic tipped screwdriver will not work. They are tiny and easy to lose
ReplyDeleteHeadlamps can still be purchased new here and there: https://parts.jaguarpalmbeach.com/p/Jaguar_1995_XJS/COMPOSITE-ASSY-Headlamp-assy-HEADLAMPS/53147764/DAC7681.html
ReplyDeleteI just did this job. How to get the difficult torx bolt is....a 6" extension, then a 3/8 swivel. Then another ext short or long (maybe not necessary)....no issue (60 seconds). Leave the inside screw until the last because the assembly will move a little to give more access.
